BIOGRAPHY OF THE PAINTER FONTANA JOSEPH

Joseph Fontana, born in Italy, took part in very many exposures as much in France that abroad (Italy, Canada, the United States, Czechoslovakia). With Quat' Z' Arts of the trades, it mixed with the largest artists, Toffoli, Carzou, Brayer. Its course is marked out rewards: diplomas of honor, medals, Grand Prix (Rome, Quebec, Cannes, Deauville, Paris…).

Its first price was decreed to him in Rome in 1975 for the portrait of his/her mother, painted then in the realistic style.

In 1977, Fontana Joseph, decides to change style, to pass from Figurative to the Néo-Cubism and to create its own universe…

The painter takes as a starting point his deep admiration, with the beauty of the achieved gestures, during work, the purity of the movement, and with spontaneousness.

But also, with the knowledge to make, which it reveals. Each one of its fabrics, tells a history. Oils with the bright colors and the harmonious forms which express the essence of the life…

The reward of which it is more to trust and the international Grand Prix of Aquitaine received of the hands of Jacques Chaban-Delmas in 1980 for a composition entitled “the harmony of the potter”. This work, from Cubist inspiration, corresponding to its new style of painting, adopted at the end of the years 1970 and does not go to cease exploring to make it evolve with its manner.

Joseph Fontana asserts readily the influence of his friendly painters referred to above (Toffoli, Carzou, Brayer) in particular that of Picasso. It is besides as one called it in his native village of Calabria when he was child.

Its vocation goes back indeed to its more young age. At the school, the mistress had habit to ask him to draw a model with the black board for all her young friends.

In the village, everyone knew its talent and requested it, which to carry out an advertizing poster, which to carve a piece of furniture or a decoration of stone.

At the time, it drew with the charcoal and the pencil. It starts to paint on its arrival in France, towards the 25 years age, material of painting is more available there than in its village of mountain.

Parallel to his trade, Joseph Fontana attends workshops, that of Pierre Lavalade in Montmartre for example. This professor and artist recognized to notice in our young artist one “something” which deserves to be worked. He proposes to support it to improve his technique.

Of this double career, professional and artistic, Joseph Fontana kept the practice to paint the night: “at one moment, he says, where one is not disturbed, where one is not likely to lose the wire of his inspiration”.

Because its inspiration will seek far in the memories of its childhood, in the reminiscence of major feeling, love, friendship, fraternity, attention paid to work…

Its paintings, primarily of the portraits, are generally homages to people, their trade, with their life, as works entitled testify some: “The slag”, “the digger”, “the adjuster”, “the clown in the large heart”, “Breton card players”.

Joseph Fontana you a deep admiration with the beauty of the gestures achieved during work, with spontaneousness, but also with the know-how which they reveal.

Child, it had school only the morning. He devoted his afternoon to the craft industry or agricultural work. From this experiment and influence of his/her father mason and sculptor, was born the love from the gestures precise, effective, of the craftsmen and peasants.

Joseph Fontana is not interested in the details; what it fascine, it is the movement, the atmosphere. Its manner of painting néo-Cubist, made up of flat tints of color, emphasizing the attitudes, serves its intentions admirably.

The characters, the animals, the objects also take part in the production of this atmosphere.

Each table tells a history. In work entitled “the adjuster”, one sees a man with a dog and a bird, and in background, a building of one of our cities of suburbs, reduced to low-size. Joseph Fontana wanted to thus represent the man hunter and dog trainer, near of nature, moving away from the life of the city, incompatible with his activities.

“The tears of a clown” represent a sad clown at the end of a spectacle. He would have liked that his pleasure of making laugh people, to be applauded, lasts a long time.

“The writer” is an old Sir, Courbé, he does not have more force, his glasses fall. Its feather is immense and its cat is represented of face and profile. Joseph Fontana wanted to make us feel the weight of the years of work…

Each one of its paintings evokes people, but also the artist; his/her friends recognize it in “the clown” or “the wet cooper”.

Its works also return us to our image, as in this painting entitled “the mirror of the birth”.

But what characterizes Joseph Fontana

really sympathetic nerve is this glance which it carries on all and all things…
